AcknowledgeMINT: As a kid growing up the way you did on the rough side of South Central Los Angeles, it’s likely there aren’t too many of your peers who went on to be revered as an elite high school, college, and NFL coach the way you have. Did you always see football as a way out of the inner city?
Hue Jackson: At some point, I did think that football could be a way out. We’d see all the stars. Where I lived on 52nd and Hoover, I wasn’t too far from the Coliseum, so you’d see USC play there, UCLA played there, the Los Angeles Rams played there, the Raiders played there. So when you’re that young elementary school kid, you envision yourself someday playing in that stadium.
You made enough noise at Dorsey High School, which earned you an opportunity to play football on scholarship at the University of Pacific. After your playing days were over, what was it that eventually led you to believe that coaching was something that you’d be able to do next?
I knew I could lead men, and that’s truly what it’s all about. It’s being in a leadership position to have people follow you, and I knew I had a skill to do that. I did it in high school, and we won a city championship. I did it in junior college, we won a championship, and things just continued to grow that way for me. My driving force was probably Jon Gruden, because he was my office mate while coaching at the University of Pacific.
That’s pretty awesome. You went on to experience more success coaching in college as well as the NFL. These days you are also experiencing big wins off the field in the spirits industry. Being that you are now a partner of Grand Leyenda Tequila, was it important for you to align with an alcoholic beverage that actually has health benefits?

Somebody showed me that you need to do these things because it gives you a chance to really decompress from football. When you’re a coach, it takes a lot of your time, and you might skip those moments when you need to get that pedicure, that manicure, and I know what that’s like. So when I look at Hammer & Nails and what they’re doing, it gives you a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of football, basketball, or whatever that is, and you can go work on you.
