Detroit Native Melvin Davis Jr. Turns Hobby into Successful Fashion Brand
Melvin Davis Jr. is the founder of MDJ Original, a fashion brand that specializes in creating unique and personalized leather jackets. Davis, a Detroit native and former Clark Atlanta University basketball letterman, started the business as a hobby after customizing his own letterman jacket in college. He was inspired by his former basketball coach, Michael Vickerstaff, who provided him room and board while attending Clark Atlanta University. Upon Vickerstaff’s passing, Davis made a jacket in his honor — a good intention that would turn into an unexpected venture.
MDJ Original’s exclusive jackets seek to take the classic leather look and add a personal unique spin to it. The brand offers a variety of jackets, including the highly sought-after letterman varsity jacket. The jackets are made from premium leather and are handmade with high-quality colorfast materials.
The brand has gained popularity among celebrities such as Lil Jon, DJ Mars, and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. One special story is that of athlete and University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders. Davis sent Sanders a jacket, which he wore on the Jimmy Fallon show.
MDJ Original is not just about fashion; it is also about giving back to the community. The brand has partnered with several non-profit organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club of America and the National Black MBA Association.
